Underwood Music Studio Information and Policies

TUITION

Tuition is calculated per year. It can be paid annually, by semester, or monthly. Annual payments will be calculated from your start date to the end of the calendar year, then will be due January 1st the following year. Semester payments are divided into 4 payments throughout the year and are due on January 1st, April 1st, July 1st, and October 1st. Monthly payments will be due the first of each month. A reminder will be sent the day before tuition is due. There will be a 2 day grace period for payments after which a $10 late fee will be applied to the unpaid tuition on the 4th of the month. After 7 days, if a payment is not made you will be removed from the studio roster. You will still be held responsible for that months’ tuition and the late fee. No lessons will be given to the student after they have been removed from the roster. Accepted forms of payment are cash, check, Venmo (@kling312), or Apple Pay. Students must take lessons each month to guarantee a spot at the studio.

*Please note that Tuition is NOT calculated by an hourly rate. There will be no discounts based on attendance.

LESSON LENGTHS ACCORDING TO LEVEL

* NOTE: These are not hard and fast lines, just a basic guideline while choosing lesson length.

  • PIANO LESSONS

    • 30 minute lessons are for beginning piano students who are between the ages of 5-12. (exceptions may apply)

    • 45 minute lessons are intended for intermediate piano students or students above the age of 12.

    • 60 minute lessons are for advanced students or students who are serious about pursuing music at the collegiate or professional level.

  • VOICE LESSONS

    • 30 minute lessons are offered for beginner students who would not be able to stay focused for a 45 minute lesson. (Due to the way voice lessons are designed I do not recommend this option.)

    • 45 minute lessons are designed for students who are beginner to intermediate level.

    • 60 minute lessons are designed for intermediate to advanced students or students who are serious about pursuing music at the collegiate or professional level.

  • SONGWRITING AND MUSIC COMPOSITION

    • 30 minute lessons are not available for this type of lesson due to how much we would need to cover

    • 45 minute lessons are designed for students who are beginner to intermediate level.

    • 60 minute lessons are designed for intermediate to advanced students or students who are serious about pursuing music at the collegiate or professional level.

CANCELLATION AND MAKE UP POLICY

Students are responsible for communicating when a lesson will be missed. With a 48 hour notice (STUDENT CANCELED), students are allowed to have 2 make-ups a year. Exceptions to the 48 hour rule include family emergencies or illnesses that cause a student to miss school. These will still count towards the two makeups a year. Communication is required for exceptions to be made up! More than 2 missed lessons WILL NOT be made up. Lessons that are canceled within 48 hours of your lesson will not be made up. All teacher cancellations will be made up! Teacher cancellations DO NOT include the scheduled lesson breaks. Scheduled breaks have been calculated into tuition. Make ups will be based on my availability. If you would like to make up a missed lesson, please reach out to me and I will provide you with my available dates and times. If I cancel your lesson, I will send out make up times for you to choose from.

REMEMBER THAT COMMUNICATION IS THE MOST IMPORTANT. I am more than willing to work with you and your situations as long as I am kept informed.

TERMINATION OF LESSONS

If you are going to be terminating lessons you are required to notify one month in advance. (Accepted dates for termination are the 1st-7th of the prior month). If you notify after these days, you will be responsible for a $30 termination fee. If you give notice after the 25th, you will be responsible for the next month of tuition. If this happens, students will still be offered their lesson time for the following month. There will be no refunds for lessons that have already been paid for if you paid per semester or annually.

Underwood Music Studio has the right to terminate your lessons at any time for any reason. If lessons are terminated for any reason, (other than nonpayment of tuition) you are entitled to a refund for the lessons not given.

EXPECTATIONS

Students are expected to practice the material given in lessons for the duration of their lesson time 5 days a week, NOT INCLUDING YOUR LESSON. For example, if you have a 30 minute lesson, students are expected to practice 30 minutes five times a week.

CONCERNS

Please keep me informed on anything that might affect the learning and development of the student. If you have any questions or concerns based on lessons or the students progress please contact and communicate with me so that the lesson experience is the best it possibly can be.

 FAQs

  • I welcome students of all ages, from young beginners to adults. However, there are a few important factors to consider before starting lessons. Students should be able to:

    - Read and comprehend basic information

    - Maintain focus for 30 to 60 minutes during lessons

    - Have a genuine interest in learning about music

These are essential for a successful learning experience. Parental motivation often isn’t sufficient on its own; the student’s interest and commitment are key to their progress.

  • Absolutely not! I take students of all music backgrounds. Whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced musician looking to enhance your skills there is a place for you here.

  • Yes! You can choose to focus on one instrument or opt for lessons in both, depending on your interests and goals.

However, if you're considering only one lesson per week, it's important to note that progress may be slower when splitting your time between both instruments. Feel free to contact me for guidance on effectively balancing multiple types of lessons.

  • Lessons are available in either 30-minute (not available for songwriting/music composition), 45-minute, or 60-minute sessions, and they can be scheduled weekly or based on your availability and preferences.

From my teaching experience, I've found that 30 minutes is well-suited for younger students with shorter attention spans, while most others benefit from 45-minute or 60-minute lessons. If you have questions about the best lesson length for you, don't hesitate to reach out.

  • Lesson times are arranged collaboratively between the teacher and the student. They are set for a specific day and time each week, maintaining consistency unless there are scheduled breaks such as holidays. Lessons are offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in the afternoons and evenings.

  • You can expect a creative and collaborative experience that is tailored to your unique goals during each lesson. Whether you're focusing on performance, songwriting, or music theory, lessons are designed to support your growth through personalized instruction. You'll learn exercises that develop both technique and expressive freedom. Much of the learning will happen through working on repertoire—or writing your own music if you're in a songwriting or composition lesson. Every session is about helping you find your voice and build the skills to share it confidently.

  • It's essential to arrange access to a piano at least five times a week to ensure progress of the student. However, you don't need one for your first lesson, but should have access to one by the second. We can discuss options and recommendations based on your unique circumstances.

  • Depending on your lesson plan, you may receive recommendations for specific books or materials. However, most students will not need to purchase any books at this time. Some students will be asked to purchase sheet music from time to time.

  • Yes! Underwood Music Studio holds 2 recitals a year. Please see the calendar to see upcoming dates.

  • To begin the enrollment process, please complete the lesson questionnaire. After that is completed, I will reach out to you to schedule a lesson time and answer any questions that you may have in 1-3 buisness days.

  • Absolutely! Whether you are looking for that fast audition prep or want a tune-up before recording it is definitely an option to try lessons with no commitment. These lessons are more expensive!

  • Yes! I do offer online lessons, but please note that they are not considered full enrollment in Underwood Music Studio and will be charged per lesson at the one-time lesson rate.

Online lessons can be a great option, but technology can sometimes be unpredictable. Students are responsible for ensuring they have a stable internet connection and the proper equipment (like a good microphone or interface) so that sound transfers clearly. Underwood Music Studio is not responsible for rescheduling or refunding lessons missed due to student tech issues.
